The Mille Miglia was born from the brilliant idea of four passionate: Renzo Castegneto, Giuseppe Mazzotti, Ajmo Maggi and Giovanni Canestrini. The day before Christmas, 1926, the four spoke about the crisis of racing; they concluded that only a new and renowned race could change the situation. One of them put on the table a map and drew a hypothetical tour following the main roads of the time, came from Brescia to Rome and back down again to the departure city. It was 1600 kilometers of mountain roads and fast straight lines through the plains. Mazzotti was who launched the proposal to call the new race “Mille Miglia”, and in just three months, the organizers launched the first edition of the race.
Mille Miglia, the test car par excellence and one of the competitions most loved by Italians, the race that pass close to home, or very few kilometers away, which allowed people to be with their idols at wheel.
The March 27, 1927, a total of 77 vehicles and 134 men came from Brescia. The couple Minoia-Morandi at the wheel of Osca Maserati won the first race. The public success was such that the Italian regime endorsed the race, ruling that it had to go in its own right in the official calendar of the Italian competitions. From 1928, the most important Italian car manufacturers with their best drivers participated in the Mille Miglia since today.

Mille Miglia is more than race cars, pilots, winners and losers. Mille Miglia is part of Italian lifestyle and its effects extend all over Italy down up to Sicily.
In the 2015 edition, the 438 cars at the start of the Mille Miglia belong to 67 different brands, and they come from 38 different countries , from all continents, a record never achieved previously , confirming the international fame of the Mille Miglia.
